Role of Landform in Differentiation of Ecosystems at the Mesoscale (Landscape Mosaics)
نویسنده
چکیده
A map showing the upper four levels of Ecomap down to the section level has been published for the entire U.S. These upper levels are based on macroclimatic conditions and the plant formations determined by those conditions. Delineation of the remaining, finer-grained subdivisions has been left for local development. Within the same macroclimate, broad-scale landforms break up the climatic pattern that would occur otherwise and provide a basis for further differentiation of mesoscale ecosystems, known as landscape mosaics. This paper suggests how different levels of landform differentiation could be correlated with landscape mosaics at different levels of resolution. Introduction Ecomap (1993) is an eight-level, nested, hierarchical and multi-factor approach to classifying and mapping ecosystem units (Table 1). The approach (herein referred to as the National Hierarchy) has been adopted by the Forest Service to provide a framework on which National Forest planning and assessment could be built.

Shifting Mosaics in Semi-Steppe Rangelands Driven by Interactive Effect of Human Made Disturbances
Semi-steppe rangelands are a complex, highly dynamic and often multi-layered mosaic of grassland, shrubland, and intermediate communities. A few recent studies have explicitly or implicitly developed synthetic hypotheses about how interactive effects of human made disturbances initiate dynamic changes in plant community composition to cause a shifting mosaic of vegetation pattern across the lan...

متن کاملOutcomes of applying a geopedologic approach to soil survey in Iran
The paper reviews a set of soil surveys carried out in Iran using a geopedologic approach for different surveying aims in different scales. Most of these studies have implemented a similar survey method including the following steps: delineation of landforms from air photos using geomorphic and soil-landscape relationships, field check of the delineations, sample areas inventory with soils clas...
متن کاملLandforms identification using neural network-self organizing map and SRTM data
During an 11 days mission in February 2000 the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) collected data over 80% of the Earth's land surface, for all areas between 60 degrees N and 56 degrees S latitude. Since SRTM data became available, many studies utilized them for application in topography and morphometric landscape analysis. Exploiting SRTM data for recognition and extraction of topographic ...

Chenges in the soil characteristics is rather continuously. A method that takes this continuity into account would present a realistic pattern of soil distribution either in taxonomic or geographical space. The fuzzy set theory provides such an approach. In this study, the robustness of fuzzy clustering in soil pattern recognition was evaluated in a subcatchment of western Iran. The clustering ...
